ILEC (Cambridge International Legal English Certificate)

Cambridge developed ILEC in cooperation with Translegal, Europe’s leading firm of lawyer-linguists, in order to assess the level in English of lawyers and law students. It allows for official confirmation of a B2-C1 level in English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and tests the candidates’ full range of communication skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking).

Who is Cambridge ILEC (Cambridge International Legal English Certificate) for?

ILEC is geared to lawyers and law students who wish to work in an international environment and to those who use legal English in their daily working lives.

Level required?

ILEC assesses the candidates’ ability to understand, analyse, and react to a number of realistic situations of the kind lawyers and legal practitioners would expect to encounter in their daily working lives.
To sit for ILEC, your level of English (B2) must allow you to:
  • use English in practical situations, to participate in meetings, negotiations, and discussions of a legal nature
  • express yourself clearly and fluently in English
  • understand and produce texts such as legal correspondence and memoranda.

What does ILEC (Cambridge International Legal English Certificate) involve?

ILEC lasts about 4 hours and consists of 4 papers:

1- Reading
This paper assesses your ability to read and understand texts of legal nature in English.

2- Writing
The writing paper assesses your ability to write texts of legal nature on a specific topic for a target reader.
 
3- Listening
The listening paper assesses your ability to understand spoken English in a number of practical situations legal practitioners are likely to encounter in their working lives.

4- Speaking 
The speaking test takes place separately from the other papers and is conducted face-to-face by qualified oral examiners. It assesses your ability to speak clearly and with fluency in English in a legal context.

Official recognition

ILEC is recognised worldwide by leading associations of lawyers, including the European Company Lawyers Association, the European Law Students Association, the International Association of Young Lawyers, and the European Young Bar Association.

The exam is also recognised by leading academic institutions such as the College of Europe.
