Levels and progression

A document officially published in 2001 by the Council of Europe allows to determine the language level of a speaker according to his/her know-how in the various areas of competence. 6 different language levels have been defined and serve as a reference in the area of the learning and teaching of languages. This summary of these 6 levels will allow you to quickly situate your current language level.

Can understand some words and the most common linguistic expressions
(*this level is not referenced by the CEFR)

Language level [A1-elementary]
Can understand very simple expressions of everyday conversations.
Can express him/herself using not very organised isolated elements.

Language level [A2-upper elementary]
Can understand everyday conversations.
Can express him/herself already in a more organised way but with very little fluency
Can master typical phrases and « school use » of the language

Language level [B1-intermediate]
Good general understanding, still with gaps in grammar, accent and vocabulary-
Can express him/herself quite clearly and in a structured way in informal contexts.

Language level [B2-upper intermediate]
Detailed understanding in various everyday, informal or professional contexts.
Can express him/herself in a well-structured, detailed and operational way, covering a wide range of subjects, but with little or no idiomatic expressions.

Language level [C1-advanced]
Very good, quick and precise understanding in numerous concrete and abstract areas.
Structured, fluent and spontaneous oral and written expression.

Language level [C2- very advanced]
Excellent understanding and expression – oral and written, very fluent, precise and skilful.
