International House (IH)

The International House school in Freiburg has operated under this label of quality for 20 years. This is your guarantee of quality teaching and incomparable service. In 1991, the school also became the organisation’s centre for training teachers of German as a foreign language. In order to ensure the supervision and care of young students during their stay, IH staff live in the residence and look after them 24 hours a day.

Courses

The 10-15 year-olds staying in the residence take their lessons at the residence itself.

10-12 and 13-15 years
For your comfort, IH differentiates between children and pre-adolescents. The two age groups are split up during lessons, for reasons of rhythm and concentration. Lessons go from 9:00 am until 11:45 am, from Monday to Friday. There are 15 lessons of 50 minutes per week and each group has two appointed teachers, for grammar and conversation. There are a maximum of 15 students per class. The school does not accept complete beginners. After lunch, you will have a one hour break in the residence. Following this, your will enjoy sports, cultural and artistic activities with your supervisors in the afternoon. After dinner, there will be other fun leisure activities, such as creative exercises, theatre, games, videos, etc.

Accommodation

Jugendgästhaus residence (10-12 and 13-15 years)
You will stay in complete security in this residence surrounded by prairies and forest in a very green area, away from the centre of Freiburg. Bedrooms sleep 4 to 6 students and are fitted with a washbasin. There is a shower and toilets shared between every two bedrooms. Whenever possible, the two age groups occupy separate wings. You will have all your meals on site. The building has several living areas, as well as a large outdoor area with a variety of equipment (ping-pong, volleyball). A municipal swimming pool and a sports centre are located just 10 minutes’ walk from the residence and it is a 25 minute walk to reach the city centre. If you have any problems, you can approach the staff at any time, as they supervise your camp 24 hours a day.

Leisure

If you live in the residence, you will enjoy two activities sessions daily during the week (in the afternoon and evening). With your supervisors, you will enjoy sports, outings and games in a fun atmosphere. On Saturdays, you will go into town to take advantage of the current cultural events: festivals, open-air circus, flea markets, etc. On Sundays, you will go on a full day excursion in Freiburg’s surrounds. Students living with a host family will benefit from all the activities programmed for the afternoons as well as the Sunday excursions. Weekday evenings as well as Saturdays will be spent with your family. On a general note, the city of Freiburg offers numerous possibilities for practising sports and having fun. It’s a very “green” city - an unofficial capital for ecology - with an extended network of cycling tracks and a healthy dose of annual sunshine.
