International House (IH)

The International House school in Freiburg has been operating under this quality label for 20 years. For you, it is a guarantee of quality teaching and unrivalled services. In addition, in 1991, the school became the centre for the training of teachers of German as a foreign language for all of the organisation. In order to assure the supervision and care of the young students during their stay, the IH group leaders stay in the residence and take care of them on a 24-hour basis.

Courses

The 16-17 year olds staying in another residence as well as the 15-17 year olds staying with a host family take classes in a summer school in the city.

15-17 years
Classes take place in a school in the city, at a rate of 20 lessons of 45 minutes per week. The classes have a maximum of 15 participants each. The school does not accept complete beginners. Each group has two teachers, for grammar and for conversation. The classes start at 9.30 a.m. and finish at 12.45 p.m. Following the lunch break, you will take part in various sports activities, visits, excursions and visits to the city with your activities coordinators.

16-17 years
All of the information for the classes for 15-17 year olds is the same as for the age bracket of 16-17 years. This weekly programme is however enriched by evening activities lead by the residence group leaders.

Please note: the school does not accept complete beginners.

Accommodation

Residence Boardinghaus (16-17 years)
The 16-17 year olds have the possibility of experiencing international contacts by staying in the Boardinghaus residence. This is situated in a residential area to the west of Freiburg, not far from the city centre. There is a bus stop just in front of it. The bedrooms of 2 to 3 beds are very comfortable and are all equipped with a bathroom, a television and a telephone. Breakfast will be served to you in the residence whilst the midday and evening meals will be taken in a restaurant in the city with the group. Only 10 minutes by foot away from the residence, you'll find a large recreation area with a lake, a swimming pool and a park. The group leaders who live in the residence and who are available on a 24-hour basis in order to supervise your leisure activities are also there to help you to integrate and to make new friends.

Host family (15–17 years)
From 15 years, you can opt to stay with a host family, All of these are used to welcoming international students and are rigorously and regularly inspected by the IH team. It is a great chance for your to discover the way of life of a German family and a dream way of putting your language knowledge into practice. The families live in the surroundings of Freiburg or in small villages nearby which are well served by public transport. You will stay in a double or triple room and will have breakfast and the evening meal with the family daily, At lunchtime, you will eat in the city with the group.

Leisure

If you are staying in the residence, you benefit from two time slots of daily activities during the week (in the afternoon and evening). With your activities coordinators, you will play sports, go on visits or play games in a very fun atmosphere. On Saturdays, you will go into the city in order to enjoy current cultural events, including festivals, an open-air circus, a flea market etc. On Sundays, you will go on a full-day excursion in the surroundings of Freiburg. By staying with a host family, you benefit from all of the scheduled activities for the afternoons as well as the Sunday excursion. Weekday evenings and during the day on Saturday are spent with your family. Generally, the city of Freiburg offers numerous possibilities for playing sport and for enjoying yourself. It's a "green" city - the unofficial capital of ecology - with a very wide network of cycle lanes and a large amount of annual sunshine.
