Malta has a rich and fascinating history. A British colony since the beginning of the 19th century, the island achieved independence in 1964. The Mediterranean culture is dominant, but 150 years of British presence left a lasting effect on the country as it inherited the language. English is one of the two official languages of Malta. The Maltese drive on the left side of the road and the most important aspects of everyday life are also carried out in English. During the summer, students from across the world come to take part in language programmes and to have great holidays. Malta appeals to everyone, with its mild climate, clear water, superb cafés and boutiques, and an exciting nightlife.
