Belgium has always lived with multilingualism. Since its independence in 1830, this constitutional monarchy tries to achieve harmony between its French-, German-, and Dutch-speaking inhabitants. 67 km of coast and coastal plains along the North Sea, a central plateau and the hills and forest of the Ardennes has shaped the highly diverse geographical landscape of this country, which plays a major political role in Europe.
