The clichés are ingrained…especially if they are true. Montreux is really, a little, and even a lot of all that. But in a different order. A transparent light along the water when parties call from afar. The reassuring sultry heat of authentic restaurants where no stranger feels as though from elsewhere. The immense balconies of the large hotels where luxury, splendour and celebrity, far from being objects of curiosity, are simply ways of living in respected privacy. The small hours of the morning are inundated with flowers, when the splendours of Zürich, the follies of Lausanne fade with the dawn. And remind us of the simple pleasures. You can then understand why Montreux, far from dazzling, seduces all of these people, arouses so much covetousness. And that the Eastern oligarchs would be prepared to pay an incredible price to have the opportunity to spend some time here. Because, deep down, Nabokov, liked this small Montreux differently, who, if it will never become huge, will always remain, for those who know it intimately, their ‘préférée entre toutes’...
