This exam replaced the former “Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache” in January 2000.
As the first level of the Goethe Institute exams, the Zertifikat B1 recognises a good base knowledge of German, as well as the capacity to communicate in all everyday situations and to understand texts of average difficulty.
The Zertifikat B1 corresponds to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Level required?
The Zertifikat B1 requires a basic knowledge of German: you must be able to express yourself in everyday life, to communicate in all commonplace situations and to understand a text of average difficulty.
What does the Zertifikat B1 involve?
The Zertifikat Deutsch is divided into two sections:
1. A written comprehension section including a task to test your grammatical skills, a comprehension exercise and a letter to write.
2. An oral test involving everyday situations and also including a conversation on a given subject.
Recognition
The Zertifikat B1 is internationally renown and highly valued by employers in both the public and private sectors. In Germany, it is accepted as proof of language skills required when applying for German citizenship.
