My name is Sara and I decided to take a course in Lyon to improve my level of French. I had started to take French classes again in Barcelona and I thought it would be a good idea to give them a boost.

I wasn’t very clear on my destination, but I finally chose Lyon because it’s a city that has everything but it’s not as big as Paris. And, as the language travel advisor that I am, and knowing the academic quality of the Alpadia school, I thought it would be a good option.

After having been there, I can say that Lyon is an ideal destination for linguistic immersion. As a city, it has everything: shops, good public transport, restaurants, bars, tourism, parks, etc. What’s more, you’re constantly surrounded by events, culture and French cuisine, and it’s a city where a lot of French natives live. That’s why you can also learn about its customs and lifestyle in addition to the language.

The first day when I arrived to my host family’s home, it was a little difficult for me to speak even though I understood Sylvie (the woman who was hosting me) very well. In the mornings, she was already working, but I enjoyed waking up and having a leisurely breakfast. In the afternoons after the activities, I went home and she was preparing dinner. I sat in the kitchen with her while she taught me French recipes. Every night we cooked a different dish, and she even taught me how to make French crêpes! I stayed in her daughter’s room who was studying in Toulouse. To this day, we still write to each other.

With regard to the school, the first day they had me arrive half an hour early to show us new students the school, city, etc. and introduce us to each other. We had 4 and a half hours of class, but the time flew by, as the teaching method that they use is very dynamic and you have two different teachers. My morning teacher made the classes very exciting and helped us improve our weaknesses. The afternoon teacher, on the other hand, gave us a topic to debate and she made us talk a lot while she provided us with useful, daily vocabulary.

There were only 6 students in class, perfect for learning more easily. At school there was a great atmosphere with a good group of students open to meeting new people and making plans after class. I felt like a part of the group from day one. The mix of nationalities was very good with few Spanish-speaking students. In the whole school, there were only two Spanish and two Mexican students, although we weren’t in the same class. Almost all of them were Swiss (from different regions), and there were students of all ages (18-22, 25-28 and 40+).

Every afternoon, the school offered an activity for whoever wanted to participate (movie, visits around Lyon, wine tasting, etc.). At the beginning of the week, they posted a schedule of the week’s activities on the bulletin board. You just needed to sign up and show up at the meeting point at the time specified (even though almost all of us went there together directly from school). The activity I liked the most was wine tasting because we went to a really authentic wine cellar where they gave us different wines and cheeses. For me, this was a very French experience!

To sum up, I’d like to say that for me, it was a great decision to take an intensive course and stay with a host family, since I learned a ton and at the end of my stay, I noticed that I really improved my fluency when speaking French. The truth is that I had a great experience and I would have liked to be able to stay for another week.

Studying at Alpadia this summer was an amazing experience. The atmosphere is great and the groups are the perfect size (around 8 people). The programme is well structured and allows you to improve at your own pace. Furthermore, the school is placed in the centre of Lyon. It’s a really pleasant city: fun and with lots of things to do!

In short, you learn and you have fun. Getting to know the country that borders with mine but that can seem so different at times is a great experience. I also recommend staying with a host family, as it is the perfect complement to a language course and it offers the complete picture of French culture.

I chose the school after having suffered a cancellation of a course in Toulouse, managed by another institution. It caught my attention the seriousness of ESL website, and I was right. Since expressed the intention to attend a week intensive course, all has been impeccable and extremely efficient; starting with the staff of the school, from administration in origin, the processing of course, the quality of information received before the trip, as well as the welcome at my arrival in school, the host family and the management of classes.I managed everything in less than 10 days and it was worth! Students in small classes (we were 6 at the level B2/C1), and teachers like Marion who have exceeded my expectations. I will repeat with ESL!

My 4 months in Lyon were amazing! I stayed with a really nice host family. I started at level A2 and ended the course with a level B2.

I believe travelling abroad can be really great and interesting if you are open-minded and want to meet people of other nationalities.

My course in Lyon lasted 4 months. I took the intensive course and stayed with a host family. The school was great. The classes are enriching and never boring, so you learn the language very quickly. You also get to know French culture. After classes, I often took part in the daily activities organised by the school. I think Lyon is an ideal place for a language course. There is a lot to do and wonderful places. I am very happy I chose to travel there.

One day, I woke up and decided I wanted to be a diplomat, but to get there, I had to finish my course at university. Two years later, I started looking for a French course and I came across ESL. I chose to stay in the loft (student apartment) and opted for the intensive course 25 option, because I needed to learn to read, write and speak in French within only 2 months.

During those two months, I worked very hard and at the end of the course, I could speak French fluently. I also met new friends from all over the world. I recommend ESL language schools for the great organisation, teachers and the atmosphere in class. Everything was perfect. I wish I could have stayed longer... Thank you ESL. Thank you Lyon. It was amazing!

I am a wine lover and Lyon is the perfect city if you love wine and also cheese. It is easy to walk around the city and I only had to take public transport a couple of times. All in all time went by really quickly and I managed to be speaking French by the end of the week! It was a great experience that I hope to repeat again soon.

My stay in the French city of Lyon was a memorable experience. It was the first time I travelled alone but I felt comfortable straight away because people on site helped me a lot and I rapidly got used to my new environment. The school is small but has everything you need. The teachers were like friends, friendly and funny and always available if we needed help or advice. The school is located in the heart of the city and well-served by public transport. Lyon is a beautiful town. It is crossed by two rivers, which creates an amazing atmosphere. At night, the city is even more attractive as the two rivers are illuminated. It is a young city and it is not too big so you can get around it quite easily with public transport. You can enjoy every area of the city, especially the historical part, the “Vieux Lyon”. I can only recommend this destination to everyone! I really had a great time there and in the end, I didn’t want to go back home. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
