Language course in New York: Shopping

ESL - Shopping
New York is the shopping capital of the world. The big names along 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue are great for window shopping or if money is no object, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to pick up something unique in New York. The West Village is great for browsing and picking up gifts for friends and family (or yourself). The Orchard Street Shopping District which runs from Houston to Canal along Allen, Orchard, and Ludlow Streets are full of bargains on leather goods, shoes and luggage during the week but many stores shut on Friday afternoon and Saturday as the Jewish shop owners observe Shabbat.

In East Village, St. Marks Place has a permanent street market that offers everything from tattoos to one-off jewellery. Union Square is a great place to grab a one-off or enjoy a coffee in the sunshine. If you are willing to go the extra mile to pick up a bargain, the Garment District along Seventh Avenue is the place to go for “sample sales” where retailers offload excess stock in one or two day events. The boutiques of the Meatpacking District and SoHo cater to discerning tastes as do the new stores that have sprung up around Nolita (North of Little Italy). That lot should get you started...
