6th January - 28th January 2018: Sydney Festival
Every January, Sydney Festival enlivens and transforms Sydney with a bold cultural celebration based on the highest quality art and big ideas. The programme is kaleidoscopic in its diversity, from burlesque circus to Chicago rap to Dutch theatre; from contemporary dance to family programmes to traditional indigenous arts practice. In all, the programme comprises around 370 performances and around 100 events performed by over 700 artists in more than 30 venues each year.
26th January 2018: Australia Day
Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD) is the place to be on Australia Day, when the nation commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. The Harbour hosts various boat races and there is a spectacular display of fireworks in the evening.
16th February – 4th March 2018: Chinese New Year celebrations
Sydney’s large Chinese community celebrates the start of the Year of the Rooster with a series of events, including street markets, dragon boat racing and a vibrant street parade. Everyone is welcome!
18th February – 3rd March 2018: Mardi Gras
Weeks of LGBT events lead up to the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade and Party.
22nd March – 3rd April 2018: Sydney Royal Easter Show
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is Australia's largest annual event, attracting close to 900,000 people each year. It is a celebration of Australian culture, from our rural traditions to our modern day lifestyle, providing unique experiences for everyone. Each year the country and city join together to enjoy agricultural competitions, animal experiences, entertainment, carnival fun, shopping and much more.
25th May - 16th June 2018: VIVID Sydney
Vivid Sydney is a unique annual event of light, music and ideas, featuring many of the world's most important creative industry forums, a mesmerizing free public exhibition of outdoor lighting sculptures, a cutting edge contemporary music programme and the spectacular illumination of the Sydney Opera House sails.
6th June - 17th June 2018: Sydney Film Festival
The 12-day festival screens feature films, short films, documentaries and animation from around the world. A top opportunity to catch the films that don’t make it to your local multiplex.
18th October – 4th November 2018: Sculpture by the Sea
See the coastal walk from Bondi Beach to Tamarama Beach transformed into a 2km-long temporary sculpture park featuring over 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.
December 2018 (TBC): Woolworths Carols in the Domain
Carols in the Domain is Australia’s largest free Christmas concert. Held in the Domain gardens, the show will help you get into the Christmas spirit with performances from a variety of artists.
31st December 2018: New Year’s Eve
Glimpse into the future in one of the first major cities in the world to welcome the new year... you can send “happy new year” text messages hours before your friends at home. The fireworks are legendary.
