1st January 2020: London's New Year's Day Parade
The New Year’s Day Parade along the streets of Central London is a must-see! Every year, dancers, marching bands, historic vehicles and giant balloons represent the diversity of each London borough, as well as different countries from around the world. This incredible event counts more than 10,000 participants and around 500,000 spectators… be one of them!
25th February 2020: Chinese New Year
Welcome the Chinese Year of the Rat in style with the huge celebrations mostly taking place in Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Chinatown. During a large street parade and live performances in Trafalgar Square, the streets rumble to the sounds of firecrackers.
29th March 2020: Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race
The Boat Race is a unique annual sport event, taking place in West London. This traditional rowing race between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club covers a 4.2-mile (6.8 km) stretch of the River Thames. And when the sun is out, all the pubs along the river come to life and the atmosphere is amazingly British!
26th April 2020: London Marathon
The modern race has been going since 1981 and is now a major event each spring, with a huge number of people taking to the streets to cheer the runners on. Entrants take a scenic tour of Central London that culminates in front of Buckingham Palace.
June 2020: West End Live in Trafalgar Square
Celebrate music and theatre! A huge stage in Trafalgar Square will host the cast of some of the best West End’s musicals and showcase their breath-taking performances for free. Sing and dance on the famous songs from Jersey Boys, Les Misérables, Wicked or Mamma Mia!
13th June 2020: Trooping the Colour
To celebrate the Queen's Official Birthday, the regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies perform a special ceremony. From Buckingham palace, the Queen travels down The Mall escorted by her personal troops to receive the royal salute. The name of the event comes from the fact that each year, one of the foot-guards regiments is selected to troop its colour through the ranks of guards.
9th June 2018 - 16th August 2020: Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
Now in its 252nd year, the exhibition displays around 1,200 works by both emerging and established British artists in all media including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, architecture and film. More than 150,000 visitors a year come to the summer exhibition at the Royal Academy, located in Piccadilly.
27th June 2020: Pride London
The Pride Festival will run from Saturday 20th June until Sunday 28th June, with the Parade and main events taking place on Saturday 27th June. A huge LGBT+ event in a huge city!
30th August – 31st August 2020: Notting Hill Carnival
Since 1964, the Notting Hill Carnival has celebrated London’s immigrant history, bringing a spirit of diversity to the west of the city.
The main parade takes place on Bank Holiday Monday and sees hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets in a sea of colours, spices and rhythms. The traditional calypso music has been joined by drum’n’bass, funk, reggae, hip-hop, trap and plenty more besides, blasting from floats that roll slowly along the streets.
19th September – 20th September 2020: Open House London
Every year, hundreds of buildings of all kinds open their doors to the public for free. Take this opportunity to visit some of the most iconic places in London, such as the Gherkin, the Shard or the very unique Sir John Soane's Museum! A very simple but powerful initiative that will take you to some hidden London gems.
