1949 At midnight 26 Irish counties officially leave the British Commonwealth. A 21-gun salute on O'Connell Bridge marks the start of the Republic of Ireland.

1916 Easter Rebellion: Martial law in Ireland is lifted and the rebellion is officially over with the surrender of Irish nationalists to British authorities in Dublin.

1834 Ireland’s first railway connects Dublin and Kingstown, 6 miles away. The line is still in operation today.

1745 Jonathan Swift donates his entire estate upon his death to found a hospital for "fools and mad".
