Attractions - Don't miss out on what the city has to offer!

A city with the reputation as the culinary capital of the world’s most culinary nation must be a good place to eat, right? Correct – Lyon is a gourmand’s delight. Fresh local ingredients come in from the surrounding countryside and are turned into distinctive local dishes, which are best sampled at the bouchons. These small local restaurants (only 20 are officially certified) are famed for their hearty, tasty food which often involves the ingredients that expensive restaurants don’t want: tripe, bone marrow, donkey snout, and pork offal sausage, to name just a few. The cooks in the bouchons turn the offcuts into delicious dishes.

The bouchons are family-run institutions which are much loved by locals. Menus change regularly so you can keep going back again and again. If you need to burn off some calories afterwards, you could consider…

Parc de la Tête d'Or
117 hectares of prime parkland including a large boating lake, a small zoo, a velodrome, boules court, botanical garden, mini-golf, horse riding and even a miniature train. It’s the perfect place to relax when the sun is shining and you are full of great food and wine.
Lyon may be a pulsating modern city, but the veins of its old town are ancient. The tunnels known as traboules were originally built to allow residents to get easily from their homes to the rivers, and were later used for everything from transporting silk to hiding people during the Second World War. A guided tour starts at €10 and is well worth it.
When Columbus first came back from Central America, the cooks of Europe did not know what to do with the strange, bitter cacao berries he brought with him. It was only decades later, after the conquest of the Aztecs, that some inspired individual added sugar and honey to make the wonderful stuff we know today.

Lyon is home to one of the great names in Chocolate: Bernachon. You may have never heard of Bernachon, but this is one of the handful of companies worldwide that actually makes chocolate, importing the berries from all over the world and making unique blends which are then shipped on to top chefs and chocolatiers. If you are looking for a little bit of Lyonnais culinary culture to bring back for loved ones, Bernachon’s boutique is a good place to start.
