Initial teacher training courses
Preparatory Course for DITALS
This course is designed for participation by both Italians and foreigners wishing to approach the profession of teaching Italian as a second language. The course runs for a duration of two weeks, with a total of 40 hours of classes and 40 hours of practicum. The course fills the gap often left by academic preparation, which separates knowledge of the language and culture and theories of didactic methods from the reality of the classroom.
This gap leaves many potential teachers without the necessary tools to impart their knowledge of the language in a learning context which takes the communicative approach from theory to practice. The course is recognized by the DITALS Department of the University for Foreigners in Siena (Università per Stranieri di Siena) as valid to be allowed to take the DITALS I exam.
Course duration: 2 weeks
Max class size: 14
Language requirement: C1/C2
Refresher Course for Teachers of Italian Abroad
This course gives teachers of Italian from different countries the possibility to exchange views and experiences and to get an update on teaching Italian in a rigorous and creative way. At the same time it offers an enjoyable and interesting update on the arts and important cultural issues through seminars, meetings and guided tours.
The course includes various interesting subjects such as: grammar, poetry, project work, wines seminars, creating teaching materials, guided tours of Rome which is known as the largest open museum in the world. As for grammar, teachers will have the possibility to develop deeper knowledge on some critical issues such as the subjunctive or time and mode agreement, and to experience new creative ways of teaching them. Discover the complex and creative process behind the planning of a teaching unit.
Central topics of the course include: teaching Italian through thematic routes, methods for teaching grammar, teaching through cultural fields and related text types (cinema, opera, advertising, film, songs, theater, etc.), considered in a language teaching perspective.
The course is divided into daily topics: lessons follow an approach based on dialogical exchange and are characterized by peer-work, theoretical lessons and practical work, workshops and guided tours. Take the opportunity to update and confront the different approaches and experiences of classroom teaching based on the assumption of Action Research: teaching as a link between theory and practice.
Course duration: 1 or 2 weeks
Number of hours: 20 or 40 hours (mostly in the morning)
Max class size: 24
Language requirement: C1/C2

Staying with a host family is the ideal option for discovering the Italian culture and practising Italian daily. The families are selected with care and are situated around 30 minutes by public transport away from the language school building. You will stay in a single room with half board provided. This experience will also allow you to get to know the Roman way of life from the inside, their customs and culinary habits and to get a taste of local hospitality.
This accommodation option allows students to share with Italian inhabitants or other students from the school. You will have your own room as well as free access to the common rooms of the apartment and will be responsible for preparing your own meals. Why not propose to your hosts that you cook a speciality of your country for them?
Torre di Babele offers an excellent range of activities for students and teachers. The DITALS course is intense and you will probably be tired in the evenings, but if you are made of tough stuff (or feel supercharged after enough espresso), you can enjoy activities like:
• Guided tours of Rome: Art history itinerary; Italian architecture itinerary
• Presentation and viewing of Italian films
• Introduction sessions to Italian literature, opera and music
• Weekend excursions to Naples, Pompeii, Orvieto, Florence and the seaside
• Visits to Rome's glorious parks (Villa Doria Pamphili, Parco della Caffarella, Appia Antica, etc)
• Sports: soccer and beach volleyball games
During the summer, the Estate Romana arts festival takes over the city, offering a huge range of outdoor events, including concerts, dance, theatre and cinema.
