Sustainable development

How ESL is approaching the challenge of sustainable development

We are committed to sustainable development and ethical business practice. Every action within the company is thought of in terms of its global impact, which directly influences company policy.

This commitment is more than environmental; the wellbeing of staff, suppliers, students and the communities to which we send students are increasingly important when we design and promote products.

Through awareness comes action and sustainable development will always be a work in progress. Our Sustainable Development Charter is just the first step in a long process that every organisation will eventually have to take.

We are currently implementing an action plan which pushes the ideas of sustainable development further into the core of our business. This includes dealing with the global challenges that can be addressed at a policy level and ensuring that our students arrive at pro-active schools, dealing with the issues on a local level.

Can a company in the travel industry ever be “green”?

Travelling by air is not environmentally friendly and yet experience is at the heart of who we are and what we offer. To know the world, first you have to get out there and see it.  We encourage train travel as an alternative but, in many cases, getting on a plane is the only practical option.

How can we start to balance these conflicting forces?

Carbon Offsetting

We provide voluntary compensatory measures against CO2 emissions and allow for innovative solutions in climate protection. All staff travel is offset.

CSR Actions

We have undertaken a whole range of actions within our offices to reduce waste and encourage conscientious behaviour. These range from using renewable electricity suppliers to buying fair trade and local products.

Charity and good causes

We are actively involved with numerous charities and good causes.

CSR Self-Assessment tool

We are championing sustainable development within the study abroad industry through our unique CSR Self-Assessment Tool.

TESTIMONIALS

Bournemouth is a pleasant city with a nice beach, lots of sports facilities and beautiful gardens. My two-weeks stay was a great experience. I took classes at Kings. This school has a very good reputation and its teaching staff is very professional and friendly. Here I was able to practise my English with native speakers. I find it important to use my English in real-life situations since the language is becoming increasingly important internationally and in interdisciplinary contexts. I stayed with a British host family, something I really recommend. In retrospect, I would even recommend attending a summer school at a younger age, for instance, during one's last high-school year. ESL really helped me along in my decision-making and I gained great confidence in this organization. I had a most unforgettable experience and would not hesitate repeating it!

My time at Shafston College has been wonderful. The school is like a family - it is small and comfortable. Meeting students from other countries has been very enjoyable - learning their customs and sometimes their languages. The teachers take care of the students - I would not have passed my Cambridge course without their support and extra help. The administration staff were amazing and I have had a great time and learnt a lot on the Gold Coast.

To perfect my French language skills I contacted ESL, who quickly helped me figure out the best options. A friend of mine had shared with me her own experiences with ESL, which made me decide to contact this organisation as well. First I visited their website which is very well organised and where you can actually find all the essential information you are looking for. Then I called them for an appointment and agreed on meeting them in their Antwerp office. Everything went pretty smoothly and we were immediately given all necessary details and explanations. Once in Tours it all started! I can really recommend the "Institut de Touraine"! The teachers are very enthusiastic and its location is excellent. I myself started at a very low level, but after three months I had acquired a very considerable knowledge of the French language. To conclude, I would like to say a few words about Tours itself, which is also very important. It is a historic town situated quite nicely between the Loire and Cher rivers. I really enjoyed the many castles and beautiful scenery alongside these two rivers. My French host family was incredibly friendly / helpful and provided everything else I needed. In short, an unforgettable experience!
