Sustainable development

How ESL is approaching the challenge of sustainable development

We are committed to sustainable development and ethical business practice. Every action within the company is thought of in terms of its global impact, which directly influences company policy.

This commitment is more than environmental; the wellbeing of staff, suppliers, students and the communities to which we send students are increasingly important when we design and promote products.

Through awareness comes action and sustainable development will always be a work in progress. Our Sustainable Development Charter is just the first step in a long process that every organisation will eventually have to take.

We are currently implementing an action plan which pushes the ideas of sustainable development further into the core of our business. This includes dealing with the global challenges that can be addressed at a policy level and ensuring that our students arrive at pro-active schools, dealing with the issues on a local level.

Can a company in the travel industry ever be “green”?

Travelling by air is not environmentally friendly and yet experience is at the heart of who we are and what we offer. To know the world, first you have to get out there and see it.  We encourage train travel as an alternative but, in many cases, getting on a plane is the only practical option.

How can we start to balance these conflicting forces?

Carbon Offsetting

We provide voluntary compensatory measures against CO2 emissions and allow for innovative solutions in climate protection. All staff travel is offset.

CSR Actions

We have undertaken a whole range of actions within our offices to reduce waste and encourage conscientious behaviour. These range from using renewable electricity suppliers to buying fair trade and local products.

Charity and good causes

We are actively involved with numerous charities and good causes.

CSR Self-Assessment tool

We are championing sustainable development within the study abroad industry through our unique CSR Self-Assessment Tool.

TESTIMONIALS

A two-month language learning trip to sunny Spain, with accommodation in a host family and a content-rich course at a real Spanish school. That is what ESL offered me, all of this well-organized, completely hassle-free without any problems. The school welcomed me very warmly, with many different nationalities represented. The only pity was that during my study period (in the fall) there were fewer students of my own age, so Nerja is especially recommendable during the summer months for people in their twenties and thirties!. My host family was very open-minded, clean and sympathetic, I could not have wished for a better stay. One thing is for sure: I will definitely go back to Nerja!

Last summer I spent 5 weeks in Vancouver to improve my English and it was an incredible experience.
Apart from the fact that the country is truly amazing, EC Vancouver welcomed me in the best possible way.
Upon arrival, all the new people went to have dinner together and visit the city, which means that you’re not alone for long; in my case, I met a group of 10 people that day, and we spent the whole stay together! (and we are still in touch!). The nationality mix and the learning method gave me a lot, and the school staff recommended us the best excursions in British Columbia (Victoria, Rockies Mountains and much more). So many good memories; I want to go back!

At the beginning of November, I went to Australia for a 7-week course, but then I saw that I was progressing so fast that I decided to stay 5 weeks longer; so in the end, I spent 3 months there. It was an incredibly rich experience, thanks to my English improvement but also to the people I met there, coming from Colombia, Brazil, Spain, South Korea, Japan, Chile and more. The school is in Brisbane’s city centre and has a nice view on King George Square. My teachers were really good, the environment was pleasant and I really started to love the language. I was lucky because I was the only French in my class, so I could speak English all the time. This is definitely one of the best schools in Brisbane if you want to improve your English while enjoying the good weather every day.
