The course is combined with music, dance, sports and cookery workshops to facilitate language learning and integration into the community. Located in a residential area close to the city centre and waterfront, the school includes 6 air-conditioned classrooms, an internet room, a Wi-Fi zone, a reading room, a relaxation area, an auditorium and a kitchen, which is also used for optional workshops. Classes put an emphasis on oral communication and are supported by the use of audio/video materials, texts and exercises.

The pace of the course and particularly the focus on grammar left me feeling like I came away not having learnt as much as I could have if the basics had been focused on and ensured I had understood and mastered. After 6 weeks I do not feel confident navigating the basics. I am unsure as to the training/not of the teachers on different learning styles/learning differences (which I have) and we were were taught by a student training teacher who was only 22 years old and not yet qualified. She was very enthusiastic and informative however too bound by the text books we were working to. This may be due to a lack of confidence or experience or due to an expectation of the management there - i.e. to have got people to a certain stage in the text books by a certain time, without checking the relevance of it. I have put the level they graded me at the end but I would dispute this and think I am still at beginner stage. Class atmosphere - other students asked to focus more on basics such as pronunciation/practical lessons/less grammar and more conversational lessons - this notably left people frustrated and disheartened when this did not happen/was too late in the course for these changes to be made. I have already fed back about the teaching method and course material - the text books felt like a franchise and outdated, the material could be a lot more varied and engaging. Use of videos etc. would have helped. Having a lack of translation I felt slowed my learning process down - I know a lot of people think that is the best way to learn but there is research both for and against and for me personally I think more translation and explanation would have helped with the speed of my learning. Meals was based on breakfast only. I wouldn't recommend this accommodation on the basis that it wasn't value for money - local air b&bs offer a higher quality service and nicer accommodation for the same price. There was a lack of natural light in the house and it was very basic. Cleanliness was an issue which was fed back to the school, expectations on how often and whose responsibility the cleaning was wasn't made clear at the start. When I realised it was the host (who hadn't cleaned the bathroom or my bedroom for the first few weeks) I fed it back to the school who asked them to clean but there wasn't much improvement. The school were excellent in that they wanted me to move but at this stage I only had a week left and it was too much effort for me to move for a week.

Host family
A homestay provides unbeatable added course value: you’ll speak Portuguese, savour local dishes and learn more about customs and habits with your hosts. Most families live less than half an hour’s walk from the school. You’ll have a single room (equipped with air-con and ceiling fans), access to Wi-Fi (most of the time) and share the bathroom and other common rooms. Weekly laundry and breakfast and dinner are included, though the option to not include meals is available. The school is closed over Carnival week, but students can stay with the host family for an additional supplement.

Pousadas and apartments
On request, we are happy to recommend pousadas or apartments close to the school. Contact us for more information.

The aim of our partner school in Olinda is to teach you Portuguese, but also provide you with a deeper insight into Brazilian culture. For this reason, it offers an exciting leisure programme, including cultural outings to Olinda and Recife, where students can visit open-air marketplaces, historical churches, museums, restaurants and bookshops, before watching a live football game. On weekdays, numerous optional activities will allow you to learn more about Brazilian music, cinema and culture, including Capoeira, which is much more than a dance style.

At the weekend, students have the opportunity to relax on beautiful beaches stretching to the horizon or explore Brazil during exciting excursions: discover Recife’s historical centre, São José’s market, Galinhas’s harbour or the beaches of Itamaracá, Gaibu, Tamandaré and Carneiros. After spending some time with the warm and joyful Brazilian people, you will come back home with only one thing in mind: going back there as soon as possible!
