Our partner school in Sámara is based in Iona Café, a welcoming tropical space where students can order their coffee and enjoy it during their lessons. Located in a small beach town that has preserved its authentic Costa Rican character, the school offers four well-equipped classrooms for up to 8 students per group, along with outdoor areas, a patio, and a cafeteria. What makes this school unique is its morning activities programme: students hike to hidden beaches like Playa Izquierda, take salsa and bachata lessons with local instructors, join yoga sessions at a private shala, and practise Spanish while exploring organic markets—all scheduled for mornings to catch the sunshine before afternoon classes (and typical afternoon rain).

Host family

ESL-host-family-accommodation-2

Our partner school carefully selects host families located in and around Sámara, ensuring students stay within easy reach of the school, beaches, and local services. Living with a Costa Rican family offers the best way to immerse yourself in local culture and practise Spanish daily in a warm, welcoming environment. You'll share meaningful conversations over two daily meals (breakfast and dinner included with half-board), learning about local customs and everyday life. Students can choose between a single or double room (for those travelling together), always with a shared bathroom. The school accommodates special diets, allergies, and non-smoking preferences when matching students to families, and preferences (such as staying closer to the beach) will be considered but not guaranteed. Free Wi-Fi, bed linens, towels, and one load of laundry per week are all included. Please note that due to Sámara's warm coastal climate, most homestays do not have hot water—this is very common in Costa Rican beach towns and not necessary in this tropical setting.

Leisure

The school organises morning and evening activities as part of the programme to immerse you in Costa Rican life beyond the classroom. Each Monday begins with a welcome tour of Sámara, where a coordinator shows new students the essential spots like banks, ATMs, supermarkets, the organic market, yoga studio, and the Iona Café, where classes are held. Throughout the week, you'll join guided hikes to "secret" beaches like Playa Izquierda and Punta Indio (easy 2-3 hour trails), take Latin dance lessons in salsa, merengue, bachata, and cumbia with a local instructor at Iona Café, and practise Spanish during 75-minute yoga sessions at a private shala in the heart of town. Fridays wrap up with an end-of-week toast at a local bar where you'll learn about typical Costa Rican drinks and test your Spanish singing skills at karaoke. On weekends, the school can arrange optional excursions like coffee plantation tours in the Hojancha region, where you'll learn the bean-to-cup process, or pottery workshops in Guaitíl village to discover traditional Chorotega indigenous crafts and visit Costa Rica's oldest church.
