Founded in 1952, Colón Language Center is one of the longest-running language schools in Germany. Its three buildings, located in a pedestrian area in the heart of the city, house some 50 teachers and 800 students, both international and German, as the institution is also a recognised centre for continuing education. This range of cultures reflects the diversity that Hamburg is known for. Our partner school has developed its own teaching manual, and uses numerous interactive resources to help you learn German. There is Wi-Fi throughout the school, so you can stay connected at all times.

Duration: 8 weeks

I’m very satisfied with my German course as well as my accommodation. I’m staying in a shared apartment with a father and his 2 sons who live in Hamburg. This type of accommodation allows me to talk to my “roommates” in German very often and even if I prepare my own meals, I often have dinner with them. My courses are demanding and I have to study at home as well but I like the fact that I have two teachers per day and that each teacher concentrate on a special matter. The first teacher concentrates on grammar and the second one on conversation.

Colón Language Center, Hamburg
Duration: 12 weeks

My stay at the Colón Language School in Hamburg for 3 months was great fun, the classes were well taught and there was plenty of opportunity to meet people from all over the world. The school residence is in an excellent location and is an easy way to get settled in. Overall my experience of Hamburg was very enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn German.

My stay in Hamburg was terrific! The city is really interesting; it is bursting with cultural treasures and entertainment options. You can find everything you want here. It is a lively city with a varied layout. As far as I am concerned, I loved the districts of Altona and Sternschanze, because they have a character of their own.

As regards the school, my classes and my teachers were very good. Even though at the beginning, I found it a bit difficult to meet people because there is no student lounge.

Host family
Host families are all chosen with care by the school and live in the city’s residential districts, around 20-45 minutes by public transport from the school. Students stay in single rooms and have the choice of half-board, breakfast only or self-catering. Staying with a host family is your opportunity to discover the local way of life through the language and people.

Hamburg is one of Europe’s most exciting cities right now, and offers a superb variety of social and sports activities. The school organises numerous excursions and tours of the city and its surroundings, including the television studios and the famous local breweries. Discover the popular local tea scene or, for night owls, clubs that rival Berlin (but without the tourist hordes). The team at Colón Language Center can help you plan your free time activities, and also offers weekend trips to Lübeck, Sylt or Bremen.
