HSK official Chinese exams and certificates

Officially recognised by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the HSK national diploma attests various levels of competence and command of Mandarin Chinese.

The general HSK is made up of a series of three exams:
Elementary / Primary-secondary / Advanced

A 'certificate of Chinese language level' is issued, stating the level achieved. This depends on the type of exam chosen and the mark obtained:

  • The elementary exam enables you to receive a certificate class 1 to 3
  • The primary-secondary exam enables you to receive a certificate class 3 to 8
  • The advanced exam enables you to receive a certificate class 9 to 11

Who is the HSK for?

The HSK is for those studying Chinese mandarin who wish to pursue learning the language and to measure their level in an objective manner. Nowadays, this certificate is essential for foreigners wanting to live, study or work in China. According to Wang Lujiang (professor at the University of Languages in Beijing): “In 2005, the number of candidates participating reached 500,000!”
