My time at Shafston College has been wonderful. The school is like a family - it is small and comfortable. Meeting students from other countries has been very enjoyable - learning their customs and sometimes their languages. The teachers take care of the students - I would not have passed my Cambridge course without their support and extra help. The administration staff were amazing and I have had a great time and learnt a lot on the Gold Coast.

My name is Julia from Switzerland and I have studied for 6 months at Shafston. I studied for 3 months in Brisbane and 3 months on the Gold Coast and during this time I improved my English a lot and this helped me achieve a B in CAE. The 6 months at Shafston has been one of the best experiences in my life.
The teachers and the staff were friendly and helped me a lot and I felt very comfortable in class as it was a very warm atmosphere. The relationship between teacher and students was not only a traditional one but become a real friendship where I felt that they cared about me and my studies.
I felt like I received personal service from ESL from the beginning and everything was organized so well and I was so well informed that I didn't have any stress or any problems and this allowed me to have an amazing experience.

I would highly recommend anyone thinking of traveling to another country that they come and see ESL.

Gold Coast – Australia’s City of Entertainment! It is not an exaggeration. Here there is constantly something to do and from October on, which offers summer temperatures – perfect to enjoy Gold Coast. You must absolutely try surfing, just for that the trip is worth it! In comparison with this active city, the school is small and has a family atmosphere. There is a café next to it – the ideal place to see your new friends or to eat together. It’s great and the food is excellent! Unfortunately few leisure activities offered by the school would get the students excited. In this area, there is room for improvement.

I'm very happy here, I'm currently completing a 12 weeks Preparation program to sit the Cambridge CAE exam. I especially like my teacher, Joanna, who is excellent. She keeps the lessons interesting with a variety of teaching methods and is very good at explaining difficult concepts. All the staff of the college are very friendly and helpful. The location of the campus is good. It is very convenient to be at the centre of the Gold Coast's Central Business District at Southport. Everything you need is nearby, including: Australia Fair Shopping Centre, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, the Broadwater Parklands, Banks, Gold Coast library, aquatic centre and many other useful places are all within walking distance of the campus. It is also good to be able to access the free wireless internet around the campus. I keep in contact with family and friends via Skype and despite the time difference between Australia and Switzerland I am easily able to keep in regular contact. My host family is very good and I am very comfortable! I live in Southport and am able to walk to the College which means I don't spend money on public transport. They also allow me to access the internet at the homestay which helps my ability to communicate with home. I found the teaching style in Australia different to what I am used to. But I have now adapted and am now very happy and looking forward to doing well in my forthcoming exam. Gold Coast is a fun city. Of course there are the beautiful beaches, entertaining nightlife and fun activities. However, what is great about the Gold Coast is its location. It is easy to travel to some great places around the Gold Coast on the weekends. This includes: Byron Bay, Sunshine Coast (Noosa), Brisbane, Fraser Island - or if you are prepared to travel a little further, the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef. After I finish my study at Shafston I intend to travel around Australia and I plan to visit Melbourne, Alice Springs and Perth.

I’ve been here at Shafston now for around 5 months and I’ve had a great time. It is a great campus in an excellent location. My teachers have been good and I feel I have really improved my English since I’ve been here. I feel when I arrived I didn’t understand anything, but now I feel a lot more comfortable with English. For about one month after I arrived in Australia I stayed with a homestay family. The homestay was fine, family was friendly and helpful, house was clean and food was good. I wanted to move a little closer to the school so I moved out of homestay after the first four weeks and have, since then, been living at the Blue Water Bay (BWB) resort. BWB has been good and I can walk to the College. It is comfortable and the facilities are excellent. I have made lots of new friends during my time at Shafston, friends from all over the world with whom I hope to maintain contact after I return home to Switzerland. The Gold Coast was the perfect choice for me. It’s the holiday atmosphere that makes it special for me, I like the relaxed attitude and lack of stress. This is very different from Switzerland. There are lots of things to do at the Gold Coast, especially when the weather is good. You can go to the beach, or the swimming pool or play sports in the park. I have also visited the theme parks and taken trips to places around the Gold Coast including Byron Bay and Noosa. I would definitely like to come back to Australia if the opportunity is there in the future.

I was attracted to the Gold Coast for its name, but I didn’t know much about it. I decided to travel to this unknown place and suddenly found myself in the craziest city I’ve ever been to. Huge buildings, restaurants, bars and clubs everywhere, but mostly… amazing beaches where I started surfing. Australians are extremely nice and warm, I soon got used to their accent! Getting bored or homesick is basically impossible when you live in such a lively place… I soon decided to stay longer. I did an 11-week course to prepare the CAE at Shafston, a small school with a nice environment and good teachers. We were nine people in the class, so the course was more intensive than a General English course and I’m very happy about my improvement. Of course, there will always be people who speak your language, but you have to try to speak English all the time… I did, and now I even dream in English!

I just came back from 4 amazing months on the Gold Coast. It was definitely too short! The Gold Coast is the ideal place to learn English in a relaxed environment. I met so many incredible people from different parts of the world and I discovered new cultures. The school is medium-sized and that is perfect if you want to make new friends easily and participate in the activities. Teachers are very good and the courses are interesting and varied. The beaches are breathtaking and the nightlife has always something to offer. I didn’t have time to get bored. This was one of the most beautiful trips of my life.
