Japanese school in Tokyo: Kudan Institute of Japanese Language & Culture

Our partner school is located on the ground floor, sixth floor and eighth floor of a nice, modern building in the centre of Tokyo. Easily reachable with the metro (Kudanshita, Jimbo-cho or Suidobashi), it has 11 spacious and bright classrooms, spread over the lower floors. The eighth floor is a large space, full of plants, which is open for students to have lunch or study before or after class. A traditional Japanese tea ceremony room and calligraphy room on this floor create a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. The school is in a business district which is home to numerous universities, shops and restaurants. You will therefore find all conveniences within a restricted perimeter. In the company of international students of more than 35 different nationalities, you will learn Japanese in excellent conditions. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the school as well as 8 computers for students, a small library, vending machine for drinks and hot/cold water dispenser. The Kudan Institute offers an authentic insight into Japanese culture, with events such as a graduation ceremony, speech contest and cultural exchange.

Kudan Institute was a really great experience for me. The school is located in the center of Tokyo and there are several metro stations close by. I like the atmosphere of the school and the staff and the teachers are funny and treat us really well. If you have any problems, they don’t hesitate to help you during class and the teachers are fun and dynamic so you almost never get bored. Your Japanese level will definitely increase very quickly. That’s why I chose to study Japanese at Kudan Institute. I’ve really enjoyed my time there and made a lot of good friends from all over the world, so you will not regret it!

This language study trip was a complete change of scenery, exactly what I was looking for. Tokyo is a fascinating city where you discover something new every day. Without having any basis in Japanese when I left..I really headed into the unknown! I wasn't disappointed. The classes were interesting and adapted to all levels. The school was in a good location and the host family was very welcoming. If you really want to learn the language, you would need to stay for a minimum of 3 months, but I advise, above all, to go there without any hesitation, whatever the duration of your stay!

For years my greatest dream has been to discover Japan. ESL gave me the opportunity to achieve this dream and even more! In addition to spending time listening to me and advising me, the ESL consultants answered all of my questions. Thus, I discovered that Japan is not a cold country, as many people think, but a wonderful country where smiling is a habit!

I decided to stay with a host family in order to get an insight into the culture. I can only recommend this option! The families are so welcoming and they are always ready to help you! It is also a great way to discover Japanese cooking! As my knowledge of English is pretty basic, the classes were difficult at first, I must admit. But thanks to the good-humoured teachers at the school, I am improving my Japanese skills every day!

To sum it up, it is a country into which you should not be afraid to immerse yourself!

Host family
The school has carefully selected a network of host families ready to welcome international students. Students sleep in a single room with half board during the week and full board at the weekend provided. Japanese culture places great importance on hospitality. When a family receives someone, they do it well and are concerned for their guest. Therefore, do not be surprised if you are asked to return home at a specific time each evening. The families mainly live in the residential districts of Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama, around one hour's journey away from the school, which is a good average considering the size of the Japanese capital. Please note: you will need to allow for around 18'000 yen per month for public transport costs between your accommodation and the school.

Guesthouse/Shared apartment
If you wish to be more independent, and for a minimum stay of one month, it is also possible to stay in a guesthouse or shared apartment in Tokyo, around 25-30 minutes from the school by train. The guesthouse is popular with international students and Japanese people. Prices and additional information on request.

After classes, go out and discover Tokyo, the largest agglomeration in the world, and allow yourself to be taken over by the magic of this city where everything is possible. Tokyo is one of the most lively entertainment places on the planet. Wander around Tokyo, from the Meiji Jingu shrine to the Ningyocho ('doll town') district, passing by the Electric Town of Akihabara; whether you're a fan of Japanese culture, or thirsty for shopping and the latest gadgets, the city will be able to satisfy all your desires. Jimbo-cho, Tokyo’s most famous secondhand book district is within walking distance of the school, as is the entertainment hub of the Suidobashi Tokyo Dome and the Kudanshita Imperial Palace, famous for its cherry blossom. The Kudan school is very well-located and allows students to easily get across the various districts of the city. In around fifteen minutes, you will be in the fashionable districts of Shibuya or Shinjuku or indeed in the district of Ikebukuro. The school offers an excellent range of activities in the city and its surroundings, including hiking at Mt. Takao/Fuji, a sport festival and ski/ snowboard trips in the legendary Japanese snow. The nearby peaks are ideal for biking, hiking and climbing. And if you really want to learn the Japanese way of life, don't forget the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, cooking classes, calligraphy or indeed to go to see a sumo match. If you are lucky enough to be in Tokyo at the arrival of spring, O-Hanami will be the very traditional occasion to have parties with your friends.

« Určitě cítím určité zlepšení. Ocitnente se v prostředí ve kterém jste nuceni používat jazyk, kterým se zabýváte. Mé komunikační schopnosti se tedy určitě zlepšily a odpadl počáteční stud z mluvení.(Japonci jsou velice chápaví a ochotni pomoci). »

« Učitélé. Bezesporu způsob výuky. Je záživný, zábavný a hlavně ne nudný. Učitelé se vám snaží co nejvíce přiblížit a to jakýmkoliv způsobem. Stud jde v tomhle případu stranou:D. »

« Japan is utterly amazing! The people are so kind and the food is great. Tokyo is such an active city- three weeks is really not enough time to experience all of the things it has to offer. The teachers also put in there very best to make sure everyone understood the lessons. Not one person was from the same country and it was a very interesting learning environment if nothing else! I am very happy with my time at the school. I would definitely encourage anyone who is interested in studying a foreign language to go for it. It is not an experience to be missed! »

Do you think you've made progress?
« I do think I have made progress. Before studying with ESL, my knowledge of the Japanese language was virtually non-existent. After my course was complete, I was able to understand and speak simple words, phrases, and questions, and I can now read hiragana and katakana. I believe this is a significant improvement. »

« Tokyo has a different atmosphere to anywhere I have ever visited before. The food is delicious, the people are very welcoming (once you make the effort!) and it feels incredibly safe. I and all the foreigners I met out in Tokyo were so sad to have to return to our home countries... Teachers were fantastic. I felt like an individual despite the large size of the school. Lovely welcoming family, really integrated me into their lives and yet I still had plenty of freedom to explore Tokyo with my friends. »
