Living and learning in Liverpool, the musical city of fun and football

By studying English in Liverpool, you’ll immerse yourself in a city where history meets creativity. Your days might flow from morning classes in the city centre to lunch at Albert Dock, followed by evenings out in the Georgian Quarter pubs. This compact city offers an authenticity that larger capitals sometimes lack. From navigating the Merseyrail system to finding your ideal home, here's what to expect in one of the UK’s most fun and affordable cities.

How transport works while studying abroad in Liverpool

Liverpool's transport network makes city navigation effortless. The Merseyrail system connects suburbs to the city centre in minutes, while frequent buses serve all major student areas — the Smithdown Road, Baltic Triangle and waterfront districts. Students can get unlimited travel with a Saveaway pass, though you might find Liverpool's compact centre perfectly walkable. The iconic ferry across the Mersey offers scenic commutes, and Lime bikes provide flexible short trips between neighbourhoods.

Accommodation for English courses in Liverpool

Liverpool's student housing market offers exceptional value compared to cities in the south of the country. Purpose-built student residences right near the city centre provide modern amenities, social spaces and all-inclusive bills.

Homestays with Liverpudlian families deliver authentic cultural immersion and home-cooked meals — language practice over a Sunday roast, anyone? Shared houses along Smithdown Road or in Toxteth, meanwhile, offer more independence.

As always, our team is on hand to help you find accommodation in Liverpool that meets your needs.

City attractions

Liverpool's cultural wealth rivals cities twice its size — and lots of it comes free or discounted for students. World-class museums like Tate Liverpool, Museum of Liverpool and Walker Art Gallery charge nothing for entry. The Beatles Story and Cavern Club are a must for any music fan, while Anfield and Goodison Park are the ultimate day out for football fans. For food, it’s got to be the waterfront cafes of Albert Dock and Baltic Market for street food.

Choose the best neighbourhood in Liverpool for you

City Centre

Vibrant hub with language school, shopping and nightlife all within walking distance.

Smithdown Road

Student heartland with budget eateries, vintage shops and lively atmosphere: 20 minutes to the city centre.

Baltic Triangle

Creative district with street art, independent cafes and warehouse venues: 15 minutes to the city centre.

Getting your visa for an English course in Liverpool

Getting a visa to study English in Liverpool depends on which passport you hold. If you have a European passport, you’ll only need an ETA (Electronic Travel Allowance). You can apply online (it doesn’t take long), and it lets you travel up to 6 months in the UK over a period of 2 years. For longer stays, you may need a Student or Standard Visitor Visa, depending on your course length and type. Non-EU students typically need to apply in advance and show proof of enrollment and funds. Contact us and we’ll be able to give you tailored advice depending on your situation.
